Man killed after colliding with wrong way driver on I-95 in Westbrook
Westbrook ― State police say a 47-year-old Madison man died Wednesday on Interstate 95 when his car collided with a wrong-way driver.
State police said the crash occurred at 8:05 p.m. between exits 66 and 65 on the southbound side of the highway.
State police said Mark A. Palumbo Jr. of Madison was driving south in a Ford Mustang when he collided with a northbound Cadillac ATS driven by Troy M. Bree, 57, of 74 Crown Knoll Court, Apt. 164, in Groton. Bree was driving toward on-coming traffic, police said.
Palumbo was pronounced dead at the scene. Bree was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The highway was shut down for several hours.
The fatal crash came on the same day that Gov. Ned Lamont joined U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy and road safety advocates for a news conference to discuss rising concerns about dangerous driving and roadway fatalities in the state. State officials said there have been 245 traffic-related deaths in the state this year as of the first week of October.
The state Department of Transportation announced earlier this month it is installing a system across the state that detects when a vehicle is traveling in the wrong direction.
Wednesday’s fatal crash remains under investigation. Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call state police in Westbrook at (860) 399-2100.
