Brush fire reignites in East Lyme
East Lyme ― Fire crews were back at the Friends of Oswegatchie Hills Nature Preserve on Tuesday to extinguish hot spots left over from a brush fire on Monday.
Firefighters had spent most of Monday extinguishing a fire that consumed about six acres of the preserve. East Lyme Fire Service Chief Bill Bundy said crews had been monitoring the area and by 8 a.m. on Tuesday had identified some areas that had reignited. Some of the equipment used to fight Monday’s fire was already in place, Bundy said.
Bundy estimated that another quarter acre of the wooded area burned on Tuesday before it was extinguished.
East Lyme firefighters were joined on Tuesday by crews from the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. The Gales Ferry and Ledyard fire departments helped shuttle water to Cove Hill Road to fill portable reservoirs that fed hoses used to fight the fire.
Bundy said he expected crews to remain at the preserve much of Tuesday. He asked that residents continue to be mindful of open flames and smoking material because of the extremely dry conditions.
“These types of fires, short of a lightning strike, are introduced by a human hand,” Bundy said.
