New London man charged with manslaughter in fatal scooter crash
New London ― Police have arrested a 30-year-old New London man on manslaughter and drunken driving charges connected to a fatal scooter crash last month.
The charges against Francha Francis of 1000 Bank St. are linked to an Oct. 9 collision on Broad Street, in the area of Cedar Grove Cemetery, that led to the death of 68-year-old Raymond Getty of 281 State St.
Records released by New London police on Monday show Francis was charged Nov. 3 with second-degree manslaughter with a motor vehicle, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, driving without a license and driving with a suspended registration or license. He was additionally charged with interfering with a police officer.
Police said Francis was operating a scooter and pulling out of Cedar Grove Cemetery at 10:56 p.m. on Oct. 9 when he struck Getty’s scooter on Broad Street.
Getty, who was found unresponsive in the road, was initially taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital for treatment. He was later transferred to Yale New Haven Hospital where he died on Oct. 11.
Francha was taken to L+M Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Francha remains held on a $100,000 bond and due to appear Dec. 19 in New London Superior Court.
