New London — New London police charged a man Wednesday with the murder of a woman he lived with on Cole Street.

David McKeever, 47, is charged with murder, interfering with police and disorderly conduct in the death of Delma Murphy, 46, who was found dead in an upstairs bedroom Wednesday afternoon at 53 Cole St.

Deputy Chief Peter Reichard said police went to the house at 12:02 p.m. after a friend of Murphy’s, who hadn’t heard from her, found the body and called police. Police said Murphy’s body showed signs of trauma.

McKeever was home when police arrived. When officers questioned him, Reichard said, “a scuffle ensued.”

Reichard said there is no indication that another person was involved in Murphy’s death. He said police believe McKeever and Murphy were “common law married.”

Police are unsure how long the body had been in the house, Reichard said.

Detectives with New London police, Connecticut State Police and the state medical examiner’s office were still on the scene Wednesday night.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the New London Police Department at (860) 447-5269 or thorough the department’s anonymous Tip411 system.
