    Connecticut College student charged in crash that seriously injured scooter driver

    New London — State Route 32 was closed for about five hours early Tuesday morning after a car crashed into a scooter near Benham Avenue, sending the scooter driver to the hospital with serious injuries, according to police.

    Police said the driver of the scooter, an unidentified man, first was taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital after the 12:18 a.m. collision. Crews there transferred him to Yale-New Haven Hospital for further treatment.

    His condition was not immediately available.

    Police have identified the driver of the car as Sophia Thielman, 19, of Rye Brook, N.Y.

    Police charged Thielman, a Connecticut College student, with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

    Police are asking witnesses of the crash to call them at (860) 447-5269.
