Norwich police ID dead man found in Shetucket River

Norwich — Police have identified the man found dead in the Shetucket River on July 22 as Jay T. Oat, 54, who had a last known address of 28 Curtis St.

Late last week, police released sketches of the man, and sought the public's help in identifying him. Many tips and leads came in as a result of the sketches, according to a news release from Norwich police. Those tips plus the cooperation of the state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and State Forensics Laboratory, helped identify the man as Oat, police said Saturday.

Oat's body was reported floating in the Shetucket River at 8:37 p.m. July 22 just off of Hamilton Avenue, near Palmer Street, by two people fishing in the area. He appeared to have been dead for a period of time, police said.

The official cause of death still is undetermined, pending further studies from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, though police say no foul play is suspected.

    The investigation is ongoing.
