Firefighters free man pinned by printing press in New London

New London — Firefighters used an inflatable airbag to free a man who was pinned inside a shipping container by a printing press at the loading dock of The Day on Wednesday.

The man was taken by ambulance to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital for evaluation of possible injuries, though no injuries were readily apparent.

The incident occurred about 3:20 p.m. off Atlantic Street. The unidentified man who was pinned was working for GSP Companies of Westerly.

Workers were loading the printing press into the container when a jack underneath the machine broke through the floor of the container. The press shifted and pinned the man against the front of the container, said New London Fire Battalion Chief Keith Nichols.

Firefighters inserted and inflated an airbag between the press and the container wall, lifted the man onto a backboard and carried him over the press onto an awaiting stretcher.

Mike Flaig, The Day’s manager of commercial sales, operations and building facilities, said the unused press previously was used for single sheet printings and not newspapers. The press was sold and heading to a buyer in Qatar.
