Ledyard — When shots rang out Tuesday night near Shewville Road and Coachman Pike, it was a vehicle carrying three cousins that got hit, according to one of the cousins who was in the car.

Standing on the porch of 904 Shewville Road on Wednesday, India Robinson said the trio was “hanging out” and had just pulled out of the driveway around 10 p.m. when bullets came flying at them “out of nowhere” from another vehicle.

Robinson, who recently moved to Virginia but is in town visiting, remembers hearing about six rounds and said she believes three of them hit the driver’s side of the vehicle. At least one bullet also hit one of her cousins in the stomach, she said.

Robinson said the last she heard, her cousin, who was taken to the hospital, is going to be just fine. She declined to give his name.

Police on Wednesday afternoon said the 29-year-old's vital signs were stable.

“To be a part of that was just crazy, it’s crazy,” she said. “I don’t even know what happened. I don’t even know who did it.”

After the shooting, Robinson and her cousins continued driving until they reached the Citgo on state Route 2 in Preston, a police news release shows. After a passenger of the vehicle called 911 to inform officials the driver had been shot, Ledyard police and American Ambulance responded to the Citgo. Officials later learned the shooting had taken place back in Ledyard.

Town detectives and the Ledyard Accident Reconstruction Team on Tuesday worked to map the scene. They also located and seized evidence, police said.

Around 9 a.m. Wednesday, two police officers were retracing their footsteps to see whether they had missed something during the previous night's search of the area. They swept their feet through the long grass that lines the roadside in the area, sometimes bending over for a closer look.

Police said they're working on several leads in the case. State police and Mashantucket Pequot Tribal police are assisting in the investigation.

Robinson said she’s been in touch with officers almost nonstop, but otherwise is trying not to think too much about what happened.

“It’s scary,” she said, noting that the darkness prevented her from seeing who fired the shots or what the vehicle looked like.

Property records show the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe owns several lots in the area, but not the land at the intersection of Shewville and Coachman.

Farther up on Coachman Pike, a man who asked not to be named for safety reasons, was trying to figure out who had been hurt.

He said he was “on the other side of the reservation” when the shooting happened, but his son was home. His son heard gunshots, as did probably everyone else in the area, the man said.

“This whole area echoes,” he explained. “He just said he heard pop, pop, pop — really quick.”

When the man returned to his house — he had to go the long way because police had blocked off the Shewville-Coachman intersection — he saw a trail of what looked to be gasoline leading up the hill away from Shewville Road. On either side were two thin white lines.

“It was like they had two flat tires and were riding on the rims,” the man said.

After an overnight rain shower, the lines were only faintly visible Wednesday morning.

Police on Wednesday confirmed the car that had been shot left the marks and the fluid on the roadway.
