Police: Man stole $1,000 in merchandise from Crystal Mall Macy's

Waterford — With the help of loss prevention personnel, police on Tuesday night arrested a man who allegedly stole $1,000 in merchandise from the Macy’s at Crystal Mall.

Police said the incident began about 7:30 p.m., when Macy’s loss prevention personnel became suspicious of a man later identified as 55-year-old Gregory Williams of Hartford. They pursued him into the front parking lot area and contacted police as they went.

Police said the security personnel successfully detained Williams before officers arrived.

On scene, officers allegedly found Williams with a pocket knife in the open position and with 31 items, mostly clothing, that had been stolen from Macy’s. Police put the price tag for the merchandise at $1,001.

Police took Williams into custody and charged him with first-degree robbery and fourth-degree larceny.

Held on a $50,000 surety bond, Williams was arraigned Wednesday morning in New London Superior Court.
