Investigation launched after several fires at Groton laundromat

Groton — Firefighters on Sunday again found themselves at 712 Long Hill Road, home to a laundromat that Poquonnock Bridge fire Chief Joe Winski said has seen several blazes over the past year.

According to Winski, the most recent fire at Super Saver Laundromat happened during the 8 o’clock hour Sunday morning. Winski said a building alarm alerted firefighters to a dryer fire.

When they arrived, firefighters found heavy smoke and fire coming from one of the dryers. They quickly extinguished the flames, but had to stay on scene for about an hour in part to ventilate the Groton Shopping Center building, which hosts several other businesses.

Winski said smoke from the blaze infiltrated the neighboring Pet Supplies Plus store. Super Saver also sustained smoke, fire and water damage, though none of the damage was structural.

Winski last March said the laundromat had seen two fires in three months. Winski wasn’t in his office when reached Monday, but said he knew of at least a couple more fires that had happened there since last March.

“This one got more advanced that the others,” Winski said of Sunday’s blaze, which brought a response from Poquonnock Bridge, Old Mystic and Submarine Base firefighters along with Lawrence + Memorial Hospital paramedics and Groton Ambulance. “It’s a concern for us.”

He said the department’s fire marshal has launched an investigation into all of the blazes at Super Saver to figure out what’s causing them.
