Passenger killed in early morning crash on I-395 in Norwich

Norwich — Police say a West Haven man died in a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 395 North early Friday morning.

Christopher Vasquez, 37, sustained fatal injuries in the crash, which state police said remains under investigation.

Vasquez was the passenger of a Honda Accord that collided with a truck and ended up off the road just south of Exit 13, police said. About 1:46 a.m., authorities received several calls reporting the crash.

Members of the Yantic Fire Engine Co. No. 1 said Yantic and East Great Plain firefighters worked for 17 minutes to extricate the driver of the car, Felix Flores, 43, of New Haven, who was transported by American Ambulance to Backus Hospital with serious injuries.

Vasquez was pronounced dead at the scene.

The truck driver, Nelson Perez-Aybar, 31, of New Jersey, suffered no apparent injuries, police said.

The state Department of Transportation said the crash prompted the temporary closure of the right lane, which has since been reopened.

State police said motorists who witnessed the accident should contact Trooper Jason Robinson at (860) 848-6500.
