Police: Tractor-trailer driver following too close in Thursday crash on I-95

Waterford — The driver of a ShopRite tractor-trailer was charged with following too close after a 7-vehicle crash on Interstate 95 South on Thursday afternoon, according to state police.

Department of Transportation officials said the wreck happened about 12:45 p.m. Thursday, less than a mile beyond Exit 81. The state police accident report stated there was one reported minor injury.

According to the report, DOT was assisting a contractor doing emergency repairs on the Oil Mill Road overpass on I-95 South, causing a traffic backup.

The driver of the ShopRite tractor-trailer, Raul Ponce, 47, of Clifton, N.J., was charged with following too close after failing to slow for traffic and rear-ending the second and third vehicles involved, the report stated.

After impact, the second vehicle struck the sides of the fourth and fifth vehicles, and the third vehicle struck the rear and side of the sixth vehicle, according to the report. The sixth vehicle then rear-ended the seventh.

I-95 South was closed in the area of the crash for about an hour and a half, and at one point traffic was backed up almost to the Gold Star Memorial Bridge.
