Shooting suspect apprehended in New London
New London — City and state police worked together Tuesday to apprehend the suspect in a morning shooting in Windham.
Brandon M. Jones, 25, of 495 Laurel Hill Road, Apt. 18, Norwich, was charged Tuesday with discharge of a firearm, second-degree breach of peace, criminal possession of a firearm, first-degree threatening and first-degree reckless endangerment. Jones was held on a $200,000 cash/surety bond and is scheduled to appear at the Danielson courthouse on Wednesday.
According to state police, troopers from Troop K in Colchester responded to a call of a reported shooting in one of the parking lots at the Windham Heights housing complex, 324 Jeffery Road, in Windham about 8 a.m. Troopers had been advised that one man had shot another man, and both men fled prior to the troopers' arrival, police said.
Police said their investigation revealed that Jones had gotten into an altercation with the victim and fired a round from a handgun he had in his possession unlawfully. However, no injuries were reported.
Shortly after the shooting, city police captains said, state police gave out information that put the getaway car on Vauxhall Street Extension.
Capt. Todd Bergeson said city officers spread throughout New London to search area parking lots. Officers located a car that matched the broadcast description at the Red Roof Inn on Colman Street.
State and city police quickly set up a perimeter, Capt. Brian Wright said. Officers learned the male suspect and a female companion were upstairs in the main building of two in the motel complex.
Bergeson said officers pinpointed where they were and evacuated nearby rooms.
Wright said police began to communicate with the man in question and he agreed to come out peacefully. Bergeson said the man was transported to Troop K in Colchester, and the vehicle was to be seized as evidence.
State police have assumed the investigation.
Bergeson also commended Waterford police, who helped handle a call reporting a violent person in New London while city officers were tied up at the motel.
