North Stonington — A Westerly man died Saturday afternoon after his car was involved in a head-on collision on Route 2.

Eugene J. Vincelette, 76, 121 Cross St., Apt. B208, died from his injuries at The William W. Backus Hospital. 

Vincelette was driving west on Route 2 near Swantown Hill Road about 12:10 p.m. when a Dodge pickup truck traveling east and driven by Matthew Cillino, 24, of 2 Elizabeth St., Westerly, veered into his lane and struck Vincelette’s vehicle head on, according to the state police’s accident summary.

Both vehicles sustained heavy front end damage and had to be towed from the scene, and both drivers were transported to Backus Hospital. Cillino sustained minor injuries.
