Griswold man charged after 1-year-old found in street

Griswold — State police arrested a Jewett City man early Monday after he was found passed out with a 1-year-old in his care wandering in the street.

Robert E. Kunkel, 33, of 133 Mathewson St. was charged with risk of injury to a minor in the incident.

At 10:49 p.m. Sunday, state police said they responded to the area of Kunkel’s home for a report of a 1-year-old wandering on the street with no adult nearby. Police determined that the child had come from Kunkel’s home where they found him unconscious in the open front doorway.

Once Kunkel gained consciousness, police said he identified the child by a photograph and admitted the child was left alone in his care. Police said there was evidence of recent drug use located on Kunckel at the time of his arrest but did not detail what it was.

Police said a family member arrived at the scene to take care of the child.

Kunkel was initially held in lieu of a $5,000 bond and was scheduled to appear Monday in Norwich Superior Court.
