Gas line broken during road work on Ocean Avenue

New London — Eversource said it has repaired a natural gas line that was broken by contractors Saturday while performing road reconstruction work on Ocean Avenue.

Fire Battalion Chief Keith Nichols said firefighters were called to a closed-off portion of Ocean Avenue about 11 a.m. for reports of a gas leak. It appeared contractors repaving the road had broken an underground street valve.

Eversource crews were on scene for about two hours to fix and cap the leak and remained for several hours more to ensure gas lines were working properly. An Eversource spokesman said there was no danger to the public in part thanks to the fact the break occurred in an area where there was no traffic.

Work on Ocean Avenue, south of Gardner Avenue to Neptune Avenue, is expected to continue Monday and Tuesday.
