Police charge New London woman in severe stabbing

Groton — A New London woman has been charged in the stabbing of a Groton woman after an assault Friday, police said in a release Saturday.

About 6:43 p.m. Friday, police were called to the Pequot Medical Center in Groton for a report of a patient with stab wounds. The woman suffered severe lacerations to her arm and chest, police said, though the wounds were not life-threatening. She later was transferred to the Yale New Haven Hospital for surgery.

Stephanie Fialco-Garchitor, 32, of 192 Shaw St., Apt. A2, New London, was charged with first-degree assault in connection with the incident.

Police said they determined in their investigation that the two women know each other and the altercation was likely part of ongoing issues between them. They confronted each other on Quincy Court in Poquonnock Bridge, police said, and the victim was cut several times with a sharp blade.

Fialco-Garchitor was arrested in New London by New London police and transferred to Groton for processing about 9 p.m. Friday. She was being held on a $500,000 bond and was transferred to York Correctional Facility.
