NFA athletic director resigns
Norwich — Norwich Free Academy Athletic Director Eric Swallow resigned Monday, just one week into the fall sports schedule.
Swallow emailed a two-sentence resignation letter to Head of School David Klein Friday morning.
"Please accept my resignation as the Director of Athletics effective on Monday, September 10, 2018," the letter stated. "I appreciate your support and leadership."
Swallow joined NFA in June 2015 to replace Gary Makowicki, who retired after 37 years at the school, including 22 as the athletic director. Swallow had served as athletic director at Southington High School prior to joining NFA and had been an assistant to legendary former University of Connecticut men's soccer coach Joe Morrone.
Swallow could not be reached for comment Monday night.
NFA spokesman Geoff Serra said Roy Wentworth, NFA faculty member and director of night school and summer school, will oversee daily operations including logistics and scheduling and will be the point of contact for coaches and teams. Director of Student Affairs John Iovino and his staff will assist with student-athlete related issues.
Management of athletic personnel records will permanently move from the Athletic Office to Human Resources to be managed by the director of human resources, Cyndee Finger, and her staff, Serra wrote.
"These adjustments will in no way impact the fall sports season, and we look forward to an exciting, competitive, and successful season," Serra wrote in the statement.
Serra would not say Monday whether Swallow’s resignation was related to an ongoing investigation by Norwich police into whether a fired school employee sexually assaulted a student or students, saying the school “does not discuss personnel matters.”
