Ledyard — Police say an intoxicated man drove his car off Long Cove Road and into a street sign and fire hydrant before fleeing the scene Monday evening.

Police said 19-year-old Skyler C. Davis of 6 Hillside Drive was driving north on Military Highway and trying to turn right onto Long Cove Road when he instead traveled into a private yard around 6:41 p.m.

Police said Davis ran from the scene but was found at a nearby residence, where “officers had probable cause to believe” he was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Police charged him with driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, evading responsibility and failure to drive right. Released on a $1,500 bond, he is due Sept. 27 in New London Superior Court.
