New basketball court opens at New London police substation

New London — A basketball court where city youth can play with police officers has opened at the Truman Street police substation, Mayor Michael Passero and Chief Peter Reichard said Wednesday.

In a news release, Reichard said his department used part of a $50,000 grant from Yale New Haven Health to convert the pavement into a seal-coated basketball court painted in green and gold, the New London Whalers’ colors.

Reichard said police also used some grant money to make the inside of the substation more suitable for small events that could include after-school programs for local youth.

Patrick Green, president and chief executive officer of Lawrence + Memorial Healthcare, said the project “is a demonstration of L+M Hospital’s support for the community.”

“We are happy to partner with our host city and its residents to identify ways to address social determinants of health,” he said.
