New London firefighters extinguish small, candle-related blaze

New London — Firefighters extinguished a small blaze that began when a candle ignited a piece of paper just before 10:30 p.m. Sunday, Fire Marshal Vernon Skau said.

Skau said the fire happened in a third-floor bedroom of a 248 Crystal Ave. apartment.

Skau said the piece of paper fell to the floor and ignited other items in the room. Firefighters contained the blaze and damage was minimal.

The tenants, including the girl whose bedroom was affected, were home but quickly called 911 and made it out safely.

The American Red Cross said it relocated three adults and one child because of the fire.

Skau said the apartment is without electricity pending an evaluation.

Skau reminded residents to take care when using candles or space heaters and to be mindful of cooking and caring for Christmas trees during the holiday season.
