Norwich — Six days after a man was shot in the chest while driving on lower Asylum Street, city police announced Monday that the shooting had occurred. The man survived.

In recent days, The Day had repeatedly asked police for details of the incident, but police would not provide any information.

Late Monday afternoon, police issued a news release saying that on Jan. 1 at 11:07 p.m., they responded to The William W. Backus Hospital after receiving a report that the hospital was treating a 22-year-old man who had been shot. Police said Monday the man sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his chest.

They said the man told them he had been shot on lower Asylum Street but was unclear as to the exact location. A male passenger in the car drove the man to the hospital, where he was treated and released during the early morning hours of Jan. 2.

Police said detectives have since conducted numerous interviews and seized several items of evidence including two motor vehicles. Police said they have determined the shooting occurred on Pearl Street at Asylum Street at approximately 11 p.m. on Jan 1. Police said they have identified a male suspect and are preparing an arrest warrant.

Police called the shooting an “isolated incident” and said they would not be releasing any further details at this time.

Asked Monday night about the delay in releasing information, Police Chief Patrick Daley said his department did not release information about the shooting for nearly a week, because they were investigating the incident. Daley also said police could not accurately establish where the incident had occurred.

"The delay was due to several challenges, several reasons," the chief said.
