Police: Ledyard officers shot, critically injured man who drove toward officer

Ledyard — Police shot and critically wounded a man who they said led them on a chase and at one point drove his vehicle toward an officer Sunday night.

Police, who haven’t identified the man, said he nearly struck a cruiser on Lantern Hill Road around 11:24 p.m., at which point the officer tried to pull the man over.

Police said the man refused to stop, turned left onto Route 214, drove through its intersection with Spicer Hill Road — police had deployed stop sticks there — and turned left onto Route 117.

Police said the man then turned right onto Reservoir View, pulled into the driveway of a home and into its backyard.

The man continued “driving erratically” in the backyard, police said, at one point driving toward an officer who had got out of his vehicle, prompting two officers to fire their duty pistols.

State police, who haven’t identified the involved officers, said they fired "several rounds."

Police said the man was struck "at least once" by gunfire and drove into a tree. Officers rendered aid and called medical personnel, police said.

Crews took the man to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London but he later was transferred to Yale New Haven Hospital.

Police said the man hasn't yet been arrested, but charges are pending.

Reservoir View is a short road that has eight homes and ends in a cul-de-sac. Police, who were there searching for evidence Monday morning, had blocked off the road at Route 117.

Up the street at the police station, officers wouldn't say at which Reservoir View home the incident took place. Chief John Rich later said the man is not from Ledyard.

Under Ledyard's use of force policy, officers can shoot at or from a moving vehicle only "as the ultimate measure of self-defense" and/or "when a suspect is using deadly force from a vehicle by any means including the vehicle itself."

The New London County State’s Attorney and the state police Eastern District Major Crime Squad are investigating the shooting.

Police posted a statement on its Facebook page Monday.

"The incident is under investigation at the direction of the New London County State's Attorney's Office, according to law and protocol for the investigation of use of force by police officers in Connecticut. As such, Ledyard Police Department will not be releasing details of such matters under active investigation," read the post.

"We greatly appreciate all the messages, phone calls, and outreach by other law enforcement agencies and officers, and by the people of our great community that we are sworn to protect and serve. Thank you all for your kind gestures of support," the post read.
