Pickup truck driver seriously injured in Pawcatuck crash

Stonington — A pickup truck driver was seriously injured Friday morning when his vehicle sideswiped a tractor-trailer near the entrance to Stop and Shop on Voluntown Road.

Police Capt. Todd Olson said the truck was traveling south and the tractor-trailer was going north when the two collided about 8:23 a.m.

A Westerly Ambulance crew took the pickup truck driver to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. The tractor-trailer driver wasn’t injured.

Olson said the tractor-trailer is equipped to carry concrete but wasn't full at the time of the crash.

Pawcatuck firefighters cleared fluid spilled by the pickup truck, and a state Department of Transportation crew sanded the road.

Olson said the Stonington accident reconstruction team responded to the scene. The road was closed for just under an hour.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
