    Police investigating Groton City shooting

Groton – City police are continuing to investigate a Sunday afternoon shooting of a man at the rear of a home on 72 Ledyard Ave.

A press release posted on the Groton City Police Facebook page Monday said the victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds but is expected to survive. Police are not currently releasing the victim's name.

Social media apparently played a role in the shooting.

"The incident appears at this point to involve a dispute over a woman, and resulting social media exchanges," the release said. It did not go into further detail.

Police are searching for people they've determined to be persons of interest in the case.

"This agency has persons of interest in a physical altercation leading to this shooting, and have investigative leads that are being currently aggressively pursued to definitively identify them," the release read.

Police said they have seized evidence and are working on search and seizure warrants to develop forensic evidence.

Groton City Police are urging anyone with information to contact either Detective Sgt. Travis Winkelman or Detective Dan Grimm at (860) 445-2451.

On Sunday, the victim was taken by car away from the scene after the 3:08 p.m. shooting and arrived at the Broad Street firehouse in New London, where he was transferred to an ambulance and taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, which was placed on lockdown. Initially, there was confusion by police over whether the shooting happened on Ledyard Avenue in Groton or Ledyard Street in New London.

Two witnesses told The Day they heard gunshots and called police. Area police departments were asked to be on the lookout for a newer model Volkswagen sedan carrying three possible suspects described as two black males and a third "tall, light-skinned male" wearing a white hoodie. The bulletin also said a 9mm handgun was used in the shooting.
