Bank and Montauk reopened after pole snapped Saturday morning

New London — The intersection of Bank Street and Montauk Avenue was closed through most of the day Saturday after a garbage truck got tangled in wires and caused a pole to break, New London fire Battalion Chief Mark Waters said.

He said the call came in at 8:16 a.m. Saturday. The City of New London posted on its Facebook page in the morning, "Bank street is shutdown at Montauk with telephone pole down. High tension wires down. Eversource notified. Not sure of any loss of power. Vehicle struck a pole."

CT Alert sent out a message after 3 p.m. that said, "There's a wire emergency. The intersection of Bank Street and Montauk Avenue in New London is completely closed to traffic until further notice. Please seek alternate routes."

Waters said at 5:15 p.m. that he expected the road to be closed for at least two more hours. He said Eversource already had replaced the pole, but the wires still had to be moved over to the new pole. Traffic was being detoured from the area.

CT Alert sent out a notification at 8:34 p.m. that the intersection had been reopened.
