Norwich — A local man faces multiple robbery, larceny and motor vehicle charges in two Dec. 13 incidents that allegedly started with a theft at Surplus Unlimited and the assault of two store employees.

Jason M. Bort, 38, of 204 Scotland Road, C5, was charged Tuesday in one warrant with second-degree robbery, second-degree assault, sixth-degree larceny, breach of peace and interfering with police. In the second warrant, he is charged with third-degree larceny of a motor vehicle, driving with a suspended license, driving with a suspended registration, traveling too fast for conditions and disobeying an officer’s signal.

Bort was arraigned Tuesday and the court retained cash bonds of $10,000 for the first incident and $5,000 for the second. He is next due in Norwich Superior Court on Feb. 25.

According to the warrants, Bort and a 25-year-old woman were at Surplus Unlimited on Dec. 13 at 4:18 p.m. Bort allegedly filled a shopping cart with car speakers. As the woman was asking a store employee whether the store was hiring, Bort allegedly left the store with the cart. A second store worker was called for and both employees went outside.

The warrant stated one employee went to the driver’s side door of a Kia Sorento and Bort allegedly said: “You can’t stop me. This is mine now that I’m out of the store.” The employee closed the door of the vehicle and Bort allegedly pushed the shopping cart toward the employee, causing the person to fall backward into bushes.

The second store employee stood in front of the car and attempted to take a photo of the license plate, the warrant stated. Bort allegedly hit the accelerator and struck the person, causing him to fall. He quickly rolled over to avoid being run over, and the car left the scene. The employee sustained a minor injury to an elbow, the warrant stated.

About an hour later, officers were dispatched to 44 Convent Ave. in Greeneville to investigate alleged drug activity. Officers said they saw the Kia Sorento, reported in the previous incident at Surplus Unlimited, parked on the road.

Police said Bort initially was in the back seat with the doors locked and moved to the front seat, ignoring officers’ instructions to get out of the car. Bort allegedly started the car and “accelerated at a very high rate of speed."

At 6:08 p.m., Dec. 13, police met with the woman who allegedly had accompanied Bort to Surplus Unlimited. She reported her car, the Kia, had been stolen. According to the warrant, the woman told police she had met Bort a couple weeks earlier and had picked him up to go to a friend’s house. She told police Bort had traded an item he stole from the store for drugs.
