Ledyard man charged in assault, theft at Preston liquor store
Preston — State police arrested a Ledyard man this week for a theft of alcoholic iced tea and assault on the 67-year-old liquor store owner.
Thomas Vocolina, 23, of 5 Laurel Ave., Ledyard, is charged with sixth-degree larceny and third-degree assault on an elderly person in connection with the Sept. 12, 2019 incident at Best Discount Wine & Liquor on Route 12 in Preston.
Police said Vocolina attempted to buy an 18-pack of Twisted Tea but was denied service by the owner because Vocolina was too intoxicated.
Vocolina left the store but returned a moment later, swiped the 18-pack off of the counter and left, police said. The owner followed him and while attempting to use his cellphone to snap a picture of Vocolina’s license plate, he said Vocolina punched him in the face and knocked him to the ground.
