Body of missing Stonington woman found in Pawcatuck River

Stonington — The body of a woman who was reported missing from Stonington earlier this week was found dead Thursday morning in the Pawcatuck River.

A Silver Alert was issued on Wednesday for 76-year-old Evelina Gaccione, who had last been seen on Tuesday, according to the Stonington Police Department and Connecticut State Police.

About 10 a.m. Thursday, Gaccione's body was found in the river near Walnut Street in Pawcatuck by a Westerly Fire Department rescue boat, according to Stonington police Capt. Todd Olson. Westerly firefighters, Pawcatuck Fire Department, North Stonington Volunteer Fire Company and state police had been searching for Gaccione since Wednesday using rescue boats, hound dogs and drones, he said.

Gaccione had lived at 16 Antoinette St. in Stonington. Her next of kin had been notified, Olson said.

The body was taken to the state medical examiner, though a cause of death had not yet been determined. Olson said the investigation was ongoing.
