New London firefighters rescue man from burning apartment

New London — City firefighters rescued a man from a burning apartment Friday afternoon.

Firefighters were called to a unit at 61A Nob Hill Road, which they had to search through smoke and fire to locate the victim, Battalion Chief Mark Waters said in an early Friday evening news release. Firefighters carried the man out of the apartment, and Groton Ambulance transported him to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital.

The fire was called in about 2:37 p.m., Waters said later by phone. Using one hose line, firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze in about 15 minutes, he said.

The man was the sole occupant of the apartment, which was uninhabitable after the fire, Waters said. The other units in the three-story, six-apartment structure are habitable, he said.

No information about the man's condition was available.

The New London Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
