Boat accident near Ledge Light and car crash on I-95 called for NL fire response

New London — Two separate accidents, one Saturday night on the water near Ledge Light and one Sunday morning at the base of the Gold Star Bridge, called for the help of the city fire department.

At 11:45 p.m. Saturday, New London Fire was dispatched to the Coast Guard Station to help remove two people from a Coast Guard vessel.

"The two injured persons, one male and one female, were picked up out of the water by the Coast Guard after their vessel struck some rocks by Ledge Light and sunk," a department press release read.

The people were treated by firefighters and then transported to Yale New Haven Health-Lawrence + Memorial Hospital for their injuries and exposure.

At 2:05 a.m. Sunday, the department was dispatched to I-95 Northbound at the base of the Gold Star Bridge for a car accident and subsequent entrapment.

Firefighters used rescue tools, including the Jaws of Life, to free the driver of the car, which took about 20 minutes. Lifestar was called to the scene. The driver, a woman, was flown to Hartford Hospital for treatment.

Additional details about the conditions of the people involved were not immediately available.
