New London — Firefighters responded early Tuesday morning to a two-alarm fire at a multifamily home on Montauk Avenue.

When firefighters arrived at 200 Montauk Ave., they found flames and smoke billowing from the rear of the building. The fire was reported about 8:11 a.m.

New London Battalion Chief Jonathon Paige said fire crews began an immediate "aggressive attack" on the fire that spread through all three floors of the dwelling, including the basement.

Paige said one resident was taken to an area hospital with an undisclosed injury. A firefighter sustained a hand injury and also was taken to the hospital.

Paige said firefighters searched the home, believing that people were trapped on the second floor, but all residents were able to safely escape. The American Red Cross was on the scene assisting the displaced residents.

He added that the heat and humidity Tuesday morning made it difficult to fight the blaze and required assistance from area fire departments. FAST teams from Poquonnock Bridge, the submarine base and Norwich responded, along with fire crews from Cohanzie and Oswegatchie. The Salvation Army Canteen Unit also responded to the scene.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation but Paige said the fire may have started on a stove.
