Police: Niantic man charged after child found in street unattended

East Lyme — A Niantic man was arrested this weekend on child endangerment charges after a 3-year-old was found walking down the middle of Black Point Road by himself, according to police.

Jason Fargo, 33, of 9 Black Point Road was charged Sunday with two counts of risk of injury to a minor.

Two 911 calls made about 5:20 p.m. alerted police that the boy was in the road with no adult in the area, East Lyme Police Department said in a news release. The responding officer, who found the child with two bystanders who had stopped to help, recognized him as living on the weekends with his father on the same road.

Police said officers tried to get in contact with Fargo through the open front door of his home but got no response. They found the man "unconscious, but breathing" in bed after they went inside.

"Fargo appeared to be intoxicated and admitted to having a few drinks," police said.

A 5-year-old child also was home at the time, according to police.

Fargo was processed and released on a $5,000 nonsurety bond and is scheduled to appear Wednesday at New London Superior Court.
