American Red Cross helping Mystic family after furnace fire

Mystic — The American Red Cross is helping a family of five displaced after an early morning furnace fire Sunday in their home at 298 Heather Glen Lane.

No one was injured, said Old Mystic Fire Department Chief Kenneth Richards.

The fire caused extensive smoke damage on the second floor, and heat traveled to the duct work on the second floor and melted some of the heat vents in the ceiling, said Richards. The fire did not cause structural damage to the home.

The family, which is staying somewhere else due to the cleanup needed in the home, is being assisted by the American Red Cross, he said.

The Red Cross said it helped out to meet the immediate needs of the family of five which includes two adults and three children, and will work with them in the coming days on a longer-term recovery plan.

“The Red Cross also provided a recovery envelope containing information helpful to families recovering from a fire, including tips on cleanup; notification of important contacts; dealing with damaged items and more,” the release stated. “The Red Cross is also providing comfort kits containing personal care items such as toothbrushes, deodorant; shaving supplies and other items a resident might need when suddenly displaced from their home by a fire.”

Douglas Lee, Jane Lionelli, Sheri MacKenzie and Sue Bolen were among those who responded from the American Red Cross, the release stated.

The Old Mystic Fire Department, Mystic Fire Department, Submarine Base FAST team, Groton Town Police, Mystic River Ambulance and Lawrence + Memorial paramedics responded, Richards said.

Richards reminded people of the importance of making sure all smoke detectors are operational.
