New London — Five people were displaced Saturday night and two firefighters were injured in a two-alarm fire that tore through a multifamily home at 69 Rosemary St.

City Fire Chief Tom Curcio said the fire was first reported sometime before 10 p.m. and firefighters arrived to find heavy fire with flames already moving into the second floor and attic of the two-story home. No injuries among the five occupants were reported but there was substantial damage to the first and second floors and roof, he said.

Curcio said two firefighters were treated and released at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital. He did not detail their injuries.

Firefighters initially made an interior attack in the home, he said. At least two ladder trucks were at the scene, spraying water onto the top floor of the home. The fire blew through the roof at 10:19 p.m.

He said firefighters had most of the fire knocked down by 10:45 p.m.

The narrow streets in the hillside neighborhood were crowded with firetrucks. New London was joined by neighboring fire departments that included Waterford, Submarine Base and Poquonnock Bridge. The Red Cross also was called in to assist families with emergency needs and accommodations. An Eversource crew also was on scene.

Curcio said Sunday the city’s fire marshal was continuing to investigate the cause of the fire.

City records show the home is owned by Old Lyme-based Sunshine Investments whose principal is Elizabeth Sunshine.
