Dr. I: Nobody cares about the fastball's horizontal break

Idle Thoughts, while waiting for a two-out hit from the Yankees, a federal ban on fireworks and for the Giants to draft 16 offensive linemen:

    • Dr. Idle, Dr. I to his close friends, doesn't necessarily consider himself a contrarian.

But if next season produces another battalion of men's basketball transfers at State U, can we start questioning culture and not robotically adhere to the "this is happening everywhere" script?

(And how comes it happens way less frequently at Villanova?)

    • If the Yankees began every inning with two on and none out, would they ever score?

    • News item: On Tuesday April 5, Front Office Sports announced that UConn's Paige Bueckers became the first women's basketball player to ever reach one million Instagram followers.

    Times, they are a changin.'

Dr. I remembers the days when UConn women's players were measured by national championships.

And for a few of those dim bulbs who try to compare Bueckers with the GOAT (otherwise known as Diana Taurasi), the national title scoreboard reads Diana 3, Paige 0.

    • In Dr. I's 45 years watching baseball, he never heard a worse broadcast than Apple+ TV's swing and miss last Friday of Mets-Nationals.

Dr. I wasn't alone in his displeasure. He took to Twitter to air his umbrage. Keith Olbermann replied, "56 years for me."

Dr. I couldn't take anymore after chatterboxes Melanie Newman, Chris Young and Hannah Keyser started talking about pet squirrels.

It was like turning on "The View" and then a baseball game broke out.

And don't even try the anti-women thing here. There are plenty of awesome female broadcasters: Beth Mowins, Pam Ward, Lisa Byington, Rebecca Lobo, Suzyn Waldman and Doris Burke among them. Apple TV needs to try harder.

    • This is from Dr. I fan John Nason (that's Nason with an "N," as he likes to say:) Why does everybody insist on going 80 MPH in the left lane of Route 32 through Quaker Hill?

Gloyoski. Some of you people need to heed "Midnight Run" and Dennis Farina's advice: "Relax. Have a cream soda."

    • The most intelligent player in baseball: Yanks reliever (and BC grad) Michael King, of course.

    • Does anyone else cringe during those post-Masters interviews inside Butler Cabin?

Poor Jim Nantz, who may get cuffed if he asks the wrong question to the dictator du jour who runs Augusta National, rarely speaks above a whisper.

Imagine if someone accidentally belched live on TV?

    • Congrats to Khaleed Exum Strong, recently named the MVP of football team at Assumption College.

Khaleed is an NFA grad and all around good guy.

    • Dr. I cabinet member Murray Renshaw makes a point here. He was watching one of his grandchildren recently and what became an interminable high school track meet.

"Can't they get a public address announcer to let the people know what event is coming next and where it will be held?" Renshaw said. "It's a lot to sit there for hours and have no idea what's going on."

    Dear ECC: Listen to Murray.

    • Note to all you people who think velocity and strikeouts are the bee's knees: Dr. I watched Saturday as a lefty reliever at Waterford, Matt Reilly, recorded 16 outs on 52 pitches.

Throw strikes, keep the ball down. Pitch to contact. The most number of outs with the fewest number of pitches.

    Rinse. Repeat.

Your fielders are out there for a reason.

    • Decision made: Dr. I has adopted the Rangers as his 2022 playoff hockey team.

He is in the process of learning his Shesterkin from his Georgiev.

    • Voltaire once said "the most important decision you make is to be in a good mood."

It appears Dr. I needs to make better decisions.

    • How much longer can Dr. I hold out?

It's been a few weeks now since TV cameras fixated on Coach K holding hands with smilin' Mrs. Coach K.

    Near withdrawal symptoms here.

    •  How did we survive before learning about the horizontal break of a fastball?

This is the opinion of Day sports columnist Mike DiMauro
