Local roundup: Waterford Legion stays alive in Northeast Regional

Worcester, Mass. — Waterford received a much-needed boost from starting pitcher Anthony Jessuck to keep its hopes alive in the American Legion Northeast Regional baseball tournament on Thursday.

Less than 24 hours after using three pitchers in a 13-3 loss to Shrewsbury (Mass.) in Thursday night’s opening round, Jessuck pitched a complete-game seven-hitter as Waterford defeated Hampden (Maine) 10-1 in an elimination game at Fitton Field.

Waterford, which is representing Connecticut after state champion Danbury opted out due to a lack of players, will play another losers’ bracket game in the double-elimination tournament on Friday at 9:30 a.m. against Greece (N.Y.), which lost 1-0 in nine innings to Essex (Vt.).

Jessuck walked two and struck out six for Waterford, which broke a 1-1 tie with four runs in the fourth and five more in the fifth. Leadoff hitter Preston Tabor, who finished 2-for-3 with three RBI, highlighted the fourth with a two-run triple and walked with the bases loaded in the fifth.

Ken Miller capped the fifth-inning outburst with a two-run single.

Jackson Long went 2-for-4 with a double and three runs scored while Bebo Martinez drove in Waterford’s first run with a one-out double in the second inning after Long had led off the inning with his double.

In Thursday night’s loss to Shrewsbury, Waterford never recovered after allowing eight runs in the second inning of a game that ended after five innings due to the 10-run rule. Sean Salvador went 2-for-2 and scored a run for Waterford while Martinez was 1-for-1 with an RBI single in the second.

    • Drew Champagne, Hendrick Khoury and Ken Olszewski combined to pitch a four-hitter as the Padres defeated the Sonics 14-5 in Game 1 of the Eastern Connecticut Major League division round playoffs on Wednesday night at Bidwell Field. Will Mann went 3-for-3 and scored three runs to lead Padres while Eric Ladd had a pair of singles, Olszewski hit a three-run homer and Khoury added a two-run double. Anthony Carambot was 2-for-3 with a run scores for the Sonics.
