Coast Guard Hall of Fame to honor NCAA football teams

New London — The 1996 and 1997 football teams, the only two in programs history to reach the NCAA Division III tournament, will be honored as part of the Coast Guard Academy Athletic Hall of Fame ceremony on Oct. 13 as part of Homecoming Weekend.

Coast Guard will honor five individuals at its annual annual fame dinner at the Otto Graham Hall of Athletic Excellence, as well as two groups of teammates, the 1996-97 football honorees and the 1984-87 women’s rowing teams which won four straight small college championships.

Individual honorees are Mike Moore, a track and field star from the Class of 1977; Tamy (Wilcox) Pelletier (Class of 1997), who excelled in cross country and track and field; baseball standout Ben Keffer (Class of 2002); volleyball All-American Nicole (Gurr) Fellers (Class of 2009) and three-time All-America swimmer and national champion Christian Brindamour (Class of 2015).

"It is an honor and privilege to announce the addition of these seven extremely talented new members to the Coast Guard Academy Athletic Hall of Fame," Coast Guard athletic director Dan Rose said in a release. "The sheer number of members slated for induction and the level of accomplishment collectively achieved by this group is remarkable.“

Moore earned All-America honors with a fifth-place finish in the high jump in 1975 and qualified for the Olympic Trials in the decathlon in 1984. He was an All-New England and All-ECAC performer in the high jump and triple jump and was captain of the 1977 unbeaten indoor team. Moore held the indoor triple jump school record which stood for 37 years and he had the best Division III high jump of 6 feet, 8.25 inches in 1975 and 6-10.5 in 1977.

Pelletier earned All-America honors in cross country (4th place in 1995) and track and field (1,500 meter indoors, 5th place) and was a four-time All-New England performer in cross country, placing second in 1995. She set a trio of records during her time at the academy. Pelletier was a three-time ECAC cross country champion and was part of the team that won the 1993 ECAC outdoor track and field championship.

Keffer is arguably one of the best pitcher/hitter combos in program history. He was a first team All-New England selection as a senior and a two-time All-NEWMAC selection. He played in the New England All-Star Game at Fenway Park. Keffer is the Bears' all-time leader with 22 wins and 244 strikeouts while holding the single-season record with 10 wins and his 84 strikeouts in a season is tied for a single-season program best. He was a perfect 6-0 on the mound as a junior and 10-3 as a senior. Keffer also holds CGA career records with 39 doubles, ranks third in RBI (92) and seventh in hits (143). He also holds the single-season school record with 16 doubles and his 143 career hits is seventh in team history.

Fellers was a second team American Volleyball Coaches Association All-American and a two-time honorable mention All-American. She was a four-time NEWMAC first team selection. Fellers is the CGA all-time leader with 1,815 kills, third in aces (237) and fifth in blocks (300). She led the Bears to the NEWMAC championship and the NCAA Elite 8 in 2006.

Brindamour won the 50 free national championship in 2014 and was a three-time All-American for the Bears (twice in the 50 free and once in the 100 free). He was the two-time NEWMAC Athlete of the Year (2014 and 2015) and holds CGA records in the 50 and 100 freestyle as well as the 100 back and four different relays.

The 1996 and 1997 football teams won back-to-back Freedom Football Conference championships and made the program’s only two NCAA playoff appearances. The teams were 17-3 in the regular season over those two seasons. The 1996 team under head coach Bill Schmitz finished 8-3 while the 1997 team led by head coach Chuck Mills tied the single-season school record with nine wins and finished 9-2 overall.

The women's rowing teams from 1984-87 won four straight Dad Vail Regatta small college national championships. The varsity four placed fifth of 40 boats at the prestigious Head of the Charles in 1984 and the varsity four won the New England Championship in 1985 and 1987
