    Local roundup: Coast Guard women’s soccer blanks Salve

    Newport, R.I. — The Coast Guard Academy women's soccer team won its second straight game to start the season, taking down Salve Regina 3-0 Wednesday.

    Renae Sanchez scored the first goal of the game and the first of her career in the 21st minute off a long free kick. In the 38th minute, Molly Huynh scored her first goal of the season, coming on a free kick from Teal Wasson.

    Chase Merrick gave Coast Guard a 3-0 lead in the 76th minute with an assist from Sidney Palinkas.

    Sophomore goalkeeper Emily Scharnitzky made a career-high 12 saves in the shutout.

    Coast Guard is back in action this weekend at the Drew Tournament, as they take on Drew on Saturday and Westfield State on Sunday.
