There are no changes in The Day’s Top 10 poll. ... for now
There were no changes among the Top 10 teams in The Day’s high school football coaches’ poll as a majority of schools across the state a bye week.
Now the fun really begins.
The high school football season has already (and inexplicably) reached the halfway point with many marquee games to be played in October. It starts with Week 6 and is highlighted by No. 3 St. Joseph at No. 7 Greenwich on Friday at 7 p.m.
Greenwich was the top-ranked team when the coaches’ poll commenced two weeks into the season. It immediately lost to current No. 1 Southington, 29-28, on Sept. 24. The Cardinals (3-1) led 21-0 after one quarter before Southington fought back.
St. Joseph (4-0) received two first-place votes this week. The Cadets are tied for third with defending Class L state champion Maloney (5-0, two-first-place votes).
Another of the state’s biggest games will be held in the Quiet Corner on Friday when Windham plays at No. 6 Killingly (6:30 p.m.). Both teams are 4-0 and two of only three unbeaten teams left in the Eastern Connecticut Conference.
Killingly has won 16 straight games.
Ledyard (4-0) is the other, and has an important ECC Division II game on Friday at Waterford (3-1) at 6 p.m.
Top-ranked Southington (5-0) received five of 13 first-place votes this week, followed by New Canaan (4-0, three first-place votes). No. 5 West Haven (4-0) received the other first-place vote.
North Haven (3-1), Shelton (3-1) and Hamden (4-0) round out the Top 10 at No. 8-10, respectively.
