    Local roundup: Lancers outlast Griswold/Wheeler wrestlers

    Griswold — Waterford recorded five pins on the way to a 46-36 wrestling victory over Griswold/Wheeler on Wednesday.

    Adam Balfour (132 pounds), Lucas Bourez (132), Lucas Gannotti (145), Devon Powers (170) and Zachary Rues (182) had the pins for the Lancers (1-1), Powers recording the fastes fall for Waterford in just 46 seconds. Brody Ruest (120) added a win by major decision (11-2) for the Lancers.

    Steven Steniger (106), Caleb Christie (126), Rylee Kenny (152) and Russell Stewart (160) had pins for the Wolverines (3-5).

    In other matches:

    • Lyman Memorial/Windham Tech defeated Bacon Academy 54-27 in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Division III match. The Bulldogs (1-2, 1-0) picked up pins from Hunter Sanchez (120), Nehemiah Czelusniak (132), David Bean (145), Cameron Sammarco (170) and Vincent Gauvin (195) while Wyatta Nowakowski (126) won by major decision (14-4) for the Bobcats (0-8, 0-1), and Carson Brown (152) and Dante Colella (182) had pins and Gabriel Mahon (160) won by technical fall (16-0).

    Girls’ basketball

    • Somers edged Ledyard 47-46 in the first round of the Valley Regional Holiday Tournament in Deep River. Adianna Hardison had 10 points for the Colonels (0-4), who will play host Valley Regional in Thursday’s consolation game at 4:30 p.m., while Kieara Kirvan added nine points and seven rebounds.

    Boys’ basketball

    • Tony Williams had 25 points, 10 assists and six stills to highlight Norwich Free Academy’s first win of the season, an 89-26 thumping of Capital Prep. Armanee Davis and Camron Barboza added 15 points apiece for the Wildcats (1-4), who led 25-8 after one quarter and were never threatened.

    • Newington defeated Waterford 50-46 in the consolation game of the Art Kohs Classic at Xavier High in Middletown. Logan Peabody had 17 points, including three 3-pointers, to go along with four assists for the Lancers (1-4) while Juan Morel Jr. had a double-double with 11 points and 15 rebonds.

    H.S. hockey

    • Owen Pazzaglia (East Lyme) scored two goals and Ethan LoVetere (Bacon Academy) added a pair of assists to lead the Eastern Connecticut Eagles to a 6-4 victory over Suffield/Granby/Windsor Locks in the Nutmeg Hockey Conference. Drew Sager (East Lyme), Gavin Casagrande (Fitch), Wade Larson (East Lyme) and Luke Cramer (Stonington) also had goals for the Eagles (2-2, 1-1), while Kaden Casteel (Waterford), Dylan Makuchowski (Ledyard) and Nick Rembish (St. Bernard) added assists and goalie Cam McCollum (East Lyme) made 22 saves.

    Women’s basketball

    • John Carroll defeated Connecticut College 50-40 in the Basketball Destinations Classic in Naples, Fla. Jaycie Rojik paced Conn with eight points, six rebounds and three steals, and Rebecca Oberman-Levine added seven points and seven boards. The Camel;s play Maine Maritime on Thursday at 1 p.m.
