Mohegan — The restructuring of the Connecticut Sun is in full swing.

Just hours after announcing that 2021 WNBA MVP Jonquel Jones had been traded to the New York Liberty as part of a three-team deal with the Dallas Stars, the Sun announced Monday afternoon that veteran point guard Jasmine Thomas has been traded to the Los Angeles Sparks.

Thomas will be reunited with former Sun head coach and general manager Curt Miller, who left the franchise after the 2022 season to become the Sparks’ head coach.

In return, Connecticut has acquired former UConn center Olivia Nelson-Ododa, Jasmine Walker and the rights to Kianna Smith. The Sparks, in addition to Thomas, received the Sun’s first rouind pick (No. 10 overall) in the 2023 WNBA Draft.

The Sun have the sixth (via the New York Liberty), 22nd and 34th picks in the draft.

"Jasmine Thomas's presence on and off the court has been both a driving force and a calming presence to her teammates," new Sun general manager Darius Taylor said in a release. “Her leadership and toughness have gotten the Connecticut Sun franchise to incredible heights over the last eight.

“As we look toward the future, we saw moving her as an opportunity to build, while also remaining as a championship contender for years to come."

Olivia Nelson-Ododa, a 6-foot-5 center who played in three Final Fours at UConn, was selected No. 19 overall by the Sparks in the 2022 WNBA Draft. She mad six starts and averaged 4.0 points and 2.9 rebounds in limited action.

"Olivia is a promising young player that gives us depth and much needed length in the post," Taylor said. "Olivia’s potential to grow as both a player and a person in our organization is limitless. We look forward to her coming back to Connecticut and joining the team."

Walker, a 6-3 forward from Alabama, was drafted seventh overall in the 2021 draft by Los Angeles Sparks. She played in only two games that season after suffering a torn ACL, then played in 32 games last season, avering 1.6 points and 1.5 rebounds per-game.

Smith, a 6-foot guard, was drafted 16th overall out of Louisville in the 2022 draft by the Sparks and averaged 2.6 points in 11 games. Taylor said Smith will likely miss the 2023 due to injury.

Due to injury, Smith is likely unable to play during the 2023 season.

"Kianna is a player that gives us depth in the backcourt for the future,“ he said. ”Kianna’s shooting and scoring capability will be welcomed in our organization. We look forward to her recovery and return to play."
