There’s weight to bear for the unbeaten Bears, who roll past Fitch in girls’ lacrosse matinee

Groton — Among the greatest, if not underrated, lines from Coaching 101 comes from UConn’s Geno Auriemma, who knows better than anyone else the stresses and strains connected to the word “undefeated.”

“If people think losing is difficult,” Auriemma would say, running his hand through his hair, “trying dealing with winning.”

Turns out Auriemma has a kinship with Jeff Medeiros, whose girls’ lacrosse team at Stonington High beat Fitch on Saturday 16-4, running its record to 14-0.

“I hate it,” Medeiros said of his team’s perfection. “It's a weight to bear. I prefer not to bear it.”

    But the Bears must bear.

“We were undefeated in 2014 and we did win the state championship, but it was a very heavy burden going into the playoffs,” Medeiros said. “We ended up losing the ECC championship to East Lyme and the weight of being undefeated had a big effect in that game. But after that loss, a weight was lifted.”

If the expectations tethered to an unbeaten record are panicking the players, the Bears, who have but two seniors (Sage Stefanski, Emma Spathakis) hardly showed it Saturday. Sophomore Emma Logel scored six goals, while teammates Autumn Christina and Shay Burnside (three goals apiece) helped along.

“We want to keep this record, especially because we lost a lot of seniors last year,” Logel said. “So we want to prove that we can hold our own. We have so far. And we’ve really improved. So we definitely want to go into our last games of the season and keep improving.”

The Bears won comfortably Saturday, although they’ve survived close games with Montville and Bacon Academy, indicating it hasn’t always come easy.

“When we do have a close game, we use it as motivation and bring it into the next game,” Logel said. “It’s like, ‘listen this is what happened and let’s use it to correct the mistakes.’ A lot of teams we’ve had close games with we’ve played twice in our division. So we try to use that and learn from it.”

The Bears, who have already won the ECC Division II title, play divisional champions Ledyard (Div. III) and East Lyme (Div. I) this week to end the regular season. The Colonels and Vikings each have only one loss.

“We haven't won anything,” Medeiros said. “I think they know that. I've said it, but I haven't had to say it much. We’re young. But in ’14, we had a strong senior team. So I think it's just a lot of a surprise to them now.”

In ’14 I talked a lot about the Patriots being undefeated. Undefeated only counts if you continue undefeated right to the end.”

Sophia Clang scored three goals for the Falcons (2-12).
