H.S. baseball: Wheeler advances to Class S quarters
Washington — Sean Bergel pitched a five-hitter as No. 10 Wheeler High School advanced to the Class S quarterfinals with a 3-1 win over No. 7 Shepaug Valley on Wednesday.
The Lions (17-6) host No. 15 Oxford on Saturday. Bergel struck out six with one walk. Bradin Anderson was 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and two RBI to lead Wheeler, Jon Anderson had two hits and Mason Perkins doubled and scored twice.
In other games:
• Alex Dreyfus allowed one hit over five innings and hit a two-run homer as No. 13 East Lyme beat No. 29 Pomperaug 4-2 in the second round of the Class L tournament. Dreyfus struck out 14 with four walks and allowed no earned runs. The Vikings (17-8) will play at No. 5 Bethel in the quarterfinals on Saturday. Ryan Wargo had two hits for East Lyme.
• Matt Shampine was 5-for-6 as No. 7 Waterford advanced to the Class M quarterfinals with a 20-2 win over No. 10 Nonnewaug. Alex Picardi had three hits and scored three runs, Harley Mish had three hits and drove in three runs and Roberto Kiefer had two hits for the Lancers (15-8), who play at No. 2 Woodland on Saturday.
• Michael Belcher pitched a two-hitter as No. 2 Woodland beat No. 15 Stonington 6-0 in the second round of the Class M tournament. The Bryant-bound Belcher struck out 14 with one walk. Dylan Cimini and Austen Linicus had hits for the Bears (15-9).
• No. 6 St. Bernard lost to No. 11 St. Paul 3-1 in the Class S second round. Martin Light pitched an eight-hitter with 10 strikeouts for the Saints. Colin O’Leary had an RBI double and Light had two hits for St. Bernard (16-7), which left seven runners on base.
• Cole Terni pitched a four-hitter as No. 9 Montville beat No. 24 Windham Tech 4-1 in the first round of the Class M tournament on Tuesday. Terni struck out eight with two walks and also doubled and drove in a run. Ryley Beyer and Eric Richmond had two hits each and Hunter Sylvia scored twice for the Wolves (14-8).
