H.S. softball: Houle earns 300th career victory as Stonington tops Lewis Mills
Stonington — Stonington scored four runs in the fourth inning, leading the seventh-seeded Bears to an 8-5 win over No. 10 Lewis Mills in the second round of the Class M state high school softball tournament Wednesday.
It was the 300th career victory for Stonington coach Ann-Marie Houle, whose team advanced to Friday’s quarterfinal round to meet No. 18 Oxford. Houle, a Stonington graduate in her 20th season as head coach, is 300-156.
Cami Brown had two hits for the Bears (17-6), including a double, and stole home in the fifth inning. Janiya Aleman tripled, Sophia Dutra doubled and Chloe Miner had two runs scored. Lindsey Houle, the coach’s daughter, was the winning pitcher.
In other games:
• East Lyme pitcher Abby Robinson struck out seven, including the 700th of her career, to finish with a school record total of 706, as No. 8 East Lyme lost to No. 9 Mercy 5-4 in eight innings in the second round of the Class L tournament. It was the second straight day of extra innings for East Lyme, which finished 17-8. Grace DuBrava and Karly Sorrentino each had a double and a run scored for the Vikings, who led 3-0 before Mercy tied it with three runs in the fifth. Mercy scored the winning run in the top of the eighth inning on a triple by Amelia Andruskiwicz and a bunt single.
• Gabby Fontaine had three hits for No. 6 Waterford, including a double, and Ava Waddington doubled twice in a 3-2 loss to No. 11 Jonathan Law in the second round of the Class L state tournament. Waterford, which had a first-round bye, finished the season 15-7. Charlotte Jessuck added two hits and two runs scored for the Lancers. Maddie Bull had three hits for Law.
• Khaiyanna Maldonado was 4-for-4 with a pair of home runs as No. 13 Norwich Tech beat No. 20 Innovation 15-2 in a Class S first-round game. Autumn Hanks pitched a four-hitter with seven strikeouts for the win. Morgan Cook homered and drove in four runs, Maldonado scored four runs and drove in five runs and Nani Garcia, Carden Stimson, Cook and Hanks had two hits each for the Warriors (17-7).
• No. 8 Bacon Academy scored seven runs in the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie and beat No. 9 Griswold 8-4. Jazlyn Small-Yu went 3-for-3 and drove in two runs for the Bobcats (17-5), who face No. 1 Watertown in the quarterfinals on Friday. Kierra Neilson and Abby Matheson had two hits each for Griswold (16-7).
• No. 7 Wheeler was eliminated from the Class S tournament, falling to No. 23 Immaculate 13-0 in a perfect game in the second round. Immaculate also hit four home runs. The Lions finished the season 15-6.
