    Local roundup: Stonington boys, girls to play for tennis titles Thursday

    Stonington — The second-seeded Stonington High School girls’ tennis team swept doubles play against No. 3 Weston on Wednesday to finish with a 5--2 victory in the semifinals of the Class M state tournament.

    The Bears (18-0) got doubles wins from the teams of Katya Snegovskikh-Lauren Buckley, Gwen McGugan-Angelina Williams and Bethany Schoenecker-Maya Bengston.

    Stonington advanced to the championship match for the third straight season, where it will meet No. 13 Lauralton Hall at 3:30 p.m. Thursday. The Stonington boys and Old Lyme girls will also compete for championships Thursday. The Stonington girls will be vying for their third state championship.

    Grace Duggan and Marina Lewandowski earned singles wins for the Bears.

    In other matches:

    • Elaina Morosky, Katherine Zhang, Emma Arelt and Rose Dimmock won singles matches for No. 2 Old Lyme in a 6-1 defeat of No. 3 Westbrook in the semifinals of the Class S state tournament. Old Lyme (19-3) will face either No. 1 Litchfield or No. 4 Valley Regional in the championship match at 3 p.m. Friday at a site to be determined. The Wildcats are three-time defending state champions. The Litchfield-Valley match will be concluded Thursday. Morosky won her match over Westbrook’s Megan Bache 5-7, 6-3, 17-15. Aggie Hunt and Beatrice Hunt won at No. 1 singles for the Wildcats.

    H.S. boys’ tennis

    • Defending Class S champion Stonington, the No. 2 seed, remained unbeaten with a 6-1 victory over No. 14 Northwest Catholic in the state tournament semifinals. The Bears (18-0) advanced to the championship match where they will face No. 5 Nonnewaug beginning at 1 p.m. Thursday. Tucker Callahan, Brady O’Neil and Matthew Turrisi won singles matches for Stonington and the Bears swept the doubles behind the teams of Chase Donnarummo-Sam Lund, Thomas Lyon-Sean Lord and Henry Sawin-Ben Mahoney. Stonington defeated Nonnewaug 6-1 to win last year’s state championship.

    H.S. boys’ golf

    • East Lyme finished unbeaten in ECC Division I with a 7-0 win over NFA. The Vikings (17-1, 6-0) also beat Old Lyme 7-0. Max Weston of East Lyme was the medalist with a 37 and teammates Tyler Moore (38), Jack Bucko (39), Sebby Randazzo (39) and Nate Blankenship also won their matches. NFA beat Old Lyme 6-1.

    • Wheeler remained unbeaten with a 172-192 win over Valley Regional in a nonleague match. Wheeler’s Jaxon Davis was the medalist with a 40 and Keiran Boscoe and Cameron Conway each shot 43 for the Lions (15-0).

    • Waterford lost to Killingly 4.5-2.5 in an ECC Division II match. Wyatt Haynes of Waterford (6-11-1, 1-4-1) was the medalist with a 40, teammate Lucas Vincenti won his match and Ethan Haynes halved his match.

    H.S. boys’ lacrosse

    • No. 3 East Lyme eliminated No. 6 Woodstock 16-1 in the second round of Class L. Drew Sager scored four times and Gabe Hanney three times for the Vikings (13-6).

    • No. 11 Stonington lost to No. 6 Old Saybrook 18-8 in the second round of the Class S tournament. Tyler Simao had three goals and two assists, Nathan Mahoney had two goals and an assist, Ethan Mahoney scored twice, Andrew Whitman made 12 saves and Kyle Olsson had a goal for the Bears (7-10).

    H.S. girls’ lacrosse

    • Quinn Brigham had five goals and an assist as No. 5 Waterford beat No. 12 Brookfield 12-2 in Class M on Tuesday. Madison LaForte had three goals and an assist, Adyson Wiseman had two goals and an assist, Katie Jamroga scored twice, Victoria Sturm had two assists and Mali Stelik had an assist for the Lancers (15-3), who will play at No. 4 Joel Barlow in the quarterfinals on Friday.

    • Sophia Gouveia had nine goals and two assists as No. 11 Wheeler defeated No. 6 Old Saybrook 15-13 in the Class S second round on Tuesday. The Lions (12-4) will visit No. 3 Canton on Friday in the quarterfinals. Grace Cassata had two goals and two assists, Naomi Boord scored twice and Katie Pierce and Ellen Anderson each scored a goal for Wheeler.

    H.S. volleyball

    • Danbury ended Norwich Free Academy’s season in the Class LL Tournament, 25-21, 22-25, 20-25, 16-25. Tyler McDermott had 12 kills and Bryan Contreras 18 digs for the Wildcats.

    College honors

    • Three members of the Mitchell College baseball team earned All-Region honors when the ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Div. III All-Region teams were announced for all 10 regions. Senior outfielder Cole Lalli was one of four outfielders and 12 position players to earn a spot on the Region 1 first team, junior Chris Gibbs was one of three pitchers voted on to the first team and senior Camren Varney was selected as one of five pitchers on the second team.

    Lalli had 59 hits, including 16 doubles, two triples, and seven home runs, while driving in 53 runs and scoring 34 times. Gibbs made 13 starts, while posting a 10-2 record with a 3.15 ERA and 73 strikeouts in 80 innings. Varney made 19 appearances on the mound, including eight starts, while posting a 5-1 record with four saves and a 2.93 ERA with 67 strikeouts in 70.2 innings.
