Local roundup: Conn College graduate Shea earns her second Olympic bid in sailing
New London — Connecticut College graduate Maggie Shea was named to the U.S. Olympic Team for sailing, making her second Olympic appearance in Paris for the 2025 Games.
Shea, a member of Conn’s Class of 2011, will serve as crew alongside skipper Stephanie Roble, with that same duo having finished 11th at the 2020 Games in Tokyo in the women’s skiff, 49erFX.
Shea becomes the second Conn College student-athlete to compete in multiple Olympic Games, joining fellow sailor Amanda Clark (Class of 2005), who sailed in 2008 in Beijing and 2012 in London. Anita DeFrantz (Class of 1974), who won bronze in women’s rowing in 1976, qualified for the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow but did not compete due to the U.S. boycott.
At Conn, Shea was a team captain and All-American who helped the program finish second at the ICSA National Championships during her senior year. She was also the recipient of the Tammy Brown '84 Award as the institution's top female scholar-athlete.
“We are incredibly proud of Maggie and wish her the best of luck in Paris,” Conn athletic director Mo White said. “It takes an incredible amount of hard work and dedication to reach this level and all of Camel Nation will be rooting her on.”
