Noteworthy: Rachel Banham shot 8-for-11 from 3-point range Sunday in the Sun’s 96-69 victory over the Phoenix Mercury, finishing with 24 points and setting the WNBA record for most 3s in a game by a reserve. She tied the Connecticut franchise record for 3s in a game, previously held by Shekinna Stricklen. “Gosh, I just feel like I’ve been waiting for this,” said Banham, who was originally drafted by the Sun in the first round in 2016, then playing four seasons in Minnesota before returning this year. “I’ve been frustrated with not hitting my shots. It feels good. I’m confident. I’m ready. I stay in the gym. I knew my time was coming. I was wishing it was sooner. It just felt really good to feel like myself and really get in a rhythm.” Sun head coach Stephanie White, a broadcaster during the winter months, recalls working the college game when Banham scored 60 points as a senior at Minnesota, shattering the Minnesota and Big Ten single-game scoring records. “I’m proud of her,” White said of Banham. “She’s someone who’s the ultimate teammate. She’s a coach on the floor. If she has a bad day, she doesn’t show it. She’s just somebody who is the consummate professional. ... We needed it. We needed that production from her.” ... Now, the Sun (18-5) play their final game before a month-long break for Saturday’s WNBA All-Star Game and the ensuing Olympic Games in Paris, facing the Liberty (20-4). New York holds a six-game regular-season winning streak against Connecticut, including two games this year, both at Mohegan Sun Arena. The Liberty won 82-75 on June 8 and 71-68 on July 10. The Sun are looking for their first win at New York since May 17, 2022. ... The Liberty last played Saturday, beating the Chicago Sky 81-67 behind 28 points from Ionescu. New York played without starters Breanna Stewart (right hamstring) and Betnijah Laney-Hamilton (right knee). Stewart, Nyara Sabally (back) and Kayla Thornton (neck) are all listed as questionable for Tuesday’s game. Laney-Hamilton is still out.
