Local roundup: UConn men add home-and-home series with Texas
Storrs — UConn has added a marquee matchup to its nonconference men’s basketball schedule. The Huskies have agreed to a home-and-home series with Texas, starting next season.
They will travel to Austin to face the Longhorns on Dec. 8 and then complete the deal by hosting Texas on Dec. 12, 2025.
The teams have met 10 times in the all-time series, with UConn leading 7-3. In the last meeting, the Huskies posted an 81-71 win in the 2023 Empire Classic title game at Madison Square Garden in New York on Nov. 20.
The Huskies have put together a strong nonconference schedule for next season.
They’ll play three games in the 2024 Maui Invitational from Nov. 25-27. The field also includes Auburn, Michigan State, Colorado, North Carolina, Dayton, Memphis and Iowa State.
They’ll host Baylor on Dec. 5 and take on Gonzaga on Dec. 14 at Madison Square Garden.
Schooners selected in MLB Draft
• Four former Mystic Schooners were selected in the 2024 Major League Baseball Draft.
Eddie Micheletti (Virginia Tech) went in the eighth round to the Toronto Blue Jays. Anthony Donofrio (North Carolina) was picked in the 10th round by the Seattle Mariners. Micheletti and Donofrio played for the Schooners in 2022.
The Colorado Rockies chose Everett Catlett (Georgetown), a Schooner in 2023, in the 12th round while Tampa Bay took Dominic Niman (Kentucky) in the 18th round. Niman wore a Mystic uniform in 2021.
In other Mystic news, Jayden Hylton (Stetson) will represent the Schooners in the New England Collegiate Baseball League home run derby, which will be held before the league all-star game Sunday at Muzzy Field in Bristol.

• The Norwich Sea Unicorns scored five runs in the seventh and final inning to beat the Westfield Starfires 11-5 in the first game of a doubleheader at Westfield, Mass. Alan Porter III (Monmouth) was 3-for-5 with a run scored for Norwich (24-15) and Kaiden Dossa (Yale) was 2-for-4, including a two-run single in the seventh. Tyler Rice (Eastern Connecticut) pitched two scoreless innings in relief to earn the victory.
Section 3 softball (8-10)
• Angie Lloyd struck out 13 and East Lyme-Salem defeated Cromwell-Newington 10-0 Monday in the opening game of the Connecticut Section 3 8-10-year-old tournament being played at Veterans Field in Niantic. East Lyme-Salem got out to an early lead, scoring four runs in the first inning, highlighted by a bases-clearing double by Charley Brennan. Paison Perkins, Lloyd, Alexa Priest and Liana Melazzo all recorded multiple hits for East Lyme-Salem.
