Local roundup: Sun trade Jefferson, Banham to Sky for Marina Mabrey
Mohegan — The Connecticut Sun announced a trade with the Chicago Sky on Wednesday, acquiring veteran guard Marina Mabrey in exchange for Moriah Jefferson and Rachel Banham.
The Sun also sent their 2025 first-round draft pick and rights to exchange 2026 first-round picks to the Sky and receive Chicago’s 2025 second-round pick.
A six-year veteran, Mabrey averaged 14 points, 4.9 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.2 steals in 24 games for the Sky.
“Today is very bittersweet,” Sun general manager Darius Taylor said in a release. “We traded two really great people who are not only good basketball players but have helped add to the winning culture we have here in Connecticut. We want to thank both Rachel and Moriah for their professionalism and contributions on and off the court.
“They will truly be missed by our fans, our team and our organization. We wish them well and much success with their new organization.”
Mabrey previously played one season for the Los Angeles Sparks (2019) and three seasons for the Dallas Wings (2020-22) before heading to Chicago in 2023.
After playing college basketball at Notre Dame, where she won a national championship in 2018, Mabry was selected 19th overall by Los Angeles in 2019 WNBA Draft.
“We are extremely excited to welcome Marina Mabrey to the Connecticut Sun,” Taylor said. “She is a player that we feel will give us the extra edge to compete for a championship this year. She brings a competitive spirit and scorer’s mentality along with an ability to make big plays.
“I believe (coach) Stephanie (White) and her staff will be able to utilize Marina in many ways as we start the second half of our season and continue our quest for our first title.”
The Connecticut Sun will return from the Olympic break on Aug. 16, visiting Dallas in Texas.
